Overview

Process control and manufacturing automation applications use a set of objects, interfaces and methods define by the OLE (Object-Linking and Embedding) for Process Control.

factory robotOPC is a software interface standard to allow communication with industrial hardware devices and is implemented in server/client pairs.

Hardware manufacturers need only provide a single OPC server for their devices to communicate with any OPC client. Software vendors simply include OPC client capabilities in their products and they become instantly compatible with thousands of hardware devices. Users can choose any OPC client software they need, resting assured that it will communicate seamlessly with their OPC-enabled hardware, and vice-versa.

The ECSP_OPC provides the industry-standard interface to manage OPC-based networks.

Applications

OPC is being used in many Industrial automation-based applications for real-time data collection from production equipment via their Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) which are process controllers commonly used in factory automation or Remote Terminal Units (RTUs).

New Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems tend to be based on OPC technology and generally refer to industrial control systems which function across a wide areas and communicate with an autonomous Remote Terminal Unit (RTU).
