Overview

The ECSP_SNMP can manage your internet networks and provide the SNMP-standard interface to your PC network management tool.

routerWhen computers became networked, they needed to be managed, which is where the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) comes into play.

SNMP is an application layer protocol that facilitates the exchange of management information between network devices. Part of the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) protocol suite, it enables network administrators to manage network performance, find and solve network problems, and plan for network growth.

SNMP is an asymmetric protocol that operates between a management station (smart) and an agent (dumb). Communication is done using a few simple packet types and a generic get-or-set function on its MIB variables.

Information may be stored at device as a combination of switches, settings, hardware counters, in memory variables and tables or files, as a database. This database of network management information is known as a MIB (Management Information Base)

Applications

Most products developed today have some kind of networking capability. In addition to the traditional enterprise space comprising computers, hubs, switches, routers and servers other networked appliance types have emerged in recent years.

Digital TV, VOIP, smart metering and CCTV cameras are a few of the many appliances that now use the internet to communicate and use SNMP to exchange information.

Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) is a protocol optimised for the transmission of voice over the internet.

Digital Televisions receive programmes directly or through set-top-boxes via cable or satellite networks. With the growth of ip-TV solutions the internet is now also a medium for the transmission of TV programmes.

Smart meters are replacing traditional meters. “Smart” utility meters involve different technology mix such as real-time or near real-time reads, power outage notification, and power quality monitoring. Suppliers will install two-way communication systems that display accurate real-time information on energy use in the home to the consumer and back to the energy supplier.

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) is the use of video cameras to transmit information to a specific, limited set of monitors. CCTV is often used for surveillance in areas that may need monitoring such as banks, casinos, airports, military installations and convenience stores.
These and many other applications have one thing in common; they need to be remotely monitored.

The ECSP_SNMP solution provides the framework to manage these types of networks.
